New Arrivals

I wanted to write a post last night about all the trail riding I've accomplished this week (aka, conditioning for Ruby to maybe dabble in endurance). But while I spent the week riding, DH spent the week plotting to start his own goat herd. He built a pen, then a shelter. And then last night he dragged me to a goat auction.
Half built goat shelter on Monday, the day he decided he wanted goats.
Completed shelter on Tuesday... he doesn't mess around!
Lots of sheep at the auction
Lil bebe goats are kinda cute, I will admit.
Myles really wanted to bring this guy home. Luckily, he was a boy, and we wanted girls.
Bottle babies 😍
We ended up with two unregistered Boer (or high percentage Boer) females, around 3 years old -- which was the goal. It was my first time bidding on an animal by the pound at this auction, you should have heard us frantically doing calculations on the sidelines while we tried to stay under the financial limit I set, haha. We planned ahead and brought the horse trailer, and they loaded right up. They were dewormed, fly sprayed, had their hooves trimmed, and are now leisurely chewing on grass in their new pen! I haven't seen them in the daylight yet, so all you get is a crappy cell phone picture from my trailer, but I'm sure they will feature heavily in my IG posts (which is where I draw about half my media), so you'll be seeing more of them in the future!

    1. Nah once he gets his mind set on something, it happens pretty quick! Jury is out on whether I will love them or not 😉 we shall see!

    They're pretty cute though.

    1. Ehhh he was going to do it regardless (we're both pretty single-minded when we get fixated on something), so I just fussed enough to build up some leverage for whatever Rolex shopping I end up doing 😋 and I made sure he got a decent deal on them instead of just wildly bidding on every goat they ran through (which was his inclination haha).

  3. I feel like your relationship with your husband's animal accumulating is how Hubby felt about me when we had our own farm. Like, you guys love us and want us to be happy, but does being happy have to involve so many probably useless pets? Which of course the answer is YES.

    1. That basically sums it up 😂 although he swears up and down they will pay for themselves when he sells the babies. I remain skeptical 🤔 and I think my favorite is that literally everyone assumes all the animal accumulation is my doing, when in reality he is responsible for the last 3 dogs, all the barn cats, the goats, etc... Haha.

    2. Oh yeah, I was big into pygmy goats that were going to pay for themselves. And then we moved to PA and sold them all at auction because I couldn't find a single private buyer and made about -$400 dollars. WORTH IT.

    3. Hahaha these ones are meat goats that sell by the pound -- fingers crossed that goes a little better for him? Whatever, if it keeps him out of my hair in the evenings so I can ride, #worthit

  4. Goats are fun (if stinky) companion animals. Boers are a good breed to sell for meat. And bonus, goat milk is always in high demand for orphaned animals.
    Yours look pretty cute :)
I always try to steal baby goats but I never get away with it.

    1. These don't seem to have much of a smell yet, but we'll see how it goes! They're still fairly standoffish but definitely not scared of people, so that's a plus!

  5. I think their names should be cuts of meat like tenderloin and drumstick 😂

  6. I think that they are cute! Are they gong to be pets? Your husband made a nice shelter.

    1. Haha these ones are going to be breeding stock/pets -- the goal is to get a few kids each year and sell to *try* to offset the cost of buying hay for the horses. We'll see how it goes, I'm not holding my breath 😋

  7. I think you and your husband and me and my husband have the opposite roles. I want goats and my husband is firmly opposed. As soon as I get my own property, I'll be out there building a pen just like your husband and buying goats. But I would totally have gotten the babies. So cute.

    1. Yeah the babies were cute but our work schedules won't allow for bottle babies. Plus, they were all boys! If he's going to do this, I told him he needs to at least *try* to make money off it... Haha.

  10. Meat? Milk? Boers are pretty good citizens of most goat breeds I've met!

    1. Goal is meat, to sell a few babies every year to offset some of my cost for horse hay. Although he's already talking about picking up a dairy doe if he can find one. I draw the line at milking a goat!! They've been angels so far, we shall see if that continues! Lol

  11. Oh yay goats! My boyfriend's buddy got two that live in his house... (so glad your goats don't live in your house)
