Rain Check

Clearly my idea to dig out some photos and do tack reviews last week was a bust, which is really a shame, since the weather wasn't much good for anything else!
Like why though? This is disgusting.
I mostly focused on keeping the horses comfortable all week, and catching up on some of the inside chores I've been ignoring. Facebook's "On This Day" reminded me that it was this time last year that Jack stopped sweating. Thankfully, our solution from last summer, AniMed SweatAgain, still seems to be working this year. He's lost a bit of weight with the heat and has been noticeably off a few times, but still seems reasonably happy and content for the moment.
Not thrilled with how he looks right now, so we're in the process of changing over to a better quality senior feed :-/
Ruby has been playing an annoying game of "lose my fly mask in turnout", so she currently has 4 fly masks at the barn to hopefully make the BO's life a little easier. Almost every time I go out I make a trek through the turnout checking for lost items. The old barn had pretty small turnouts, so finding lost items was a lot easier -- not that I'm complaining about the nice big grass turnouts now, but it does complicate finding lost articles of clothing... haha.
Fly mask? I don't wear one of those.
At any rate, Ruby is looking fantastic. I did make it out earlier this week to lunge her, and she was a cuddlebug. Although she was sporting some nasty mud dreadlocks, ugh. I really wanted to bathe her this week and try out the EquiFuse Rehydrinse that I bought a while back (DIY Horse Ownership did a really good review of it, which got me interested). But alas, our forecast calls for significant rain tomorrow, so it seemed silly to get her all cleaned up just to let her get coated in mud again. So I'll take a rain check (hardy har har) on that.

Those dapples though <3
Cinna hasn't done anything but play pony model for a while. I got a box full of goodies from Aimee, and naturally I couldn't wait to try a few of them on! I haven't had a chance to work her much at the house because the arena needs to be dragged -- we had a freak rainstorm dump about 4 inches on us over the weekend (not complaining, because we needed the rain), but I haven't been able to drag the arena because the brushhog is hooked up to the tractor.
Sparkle pony!

We are using the brushhog a lot more this year than in years past because 3 horses can't keep up with all the grass (which is  good problem to have I guess!). DH got the front paddocks mowed last week, so last night I took my turn and knocked out about half of the back pasture. Hopefully I can finish it up tonight -- although as I said, significant rainstorm coming tomorrow so won't be any point in dragging the arena until that's over, lol. Ah well. The work on a farm is never done!

Role reversal! Normally I'm bringing him a drink while he is on the tractor... haha.
We have a few other miscellaneous little projects going on -- we bought some decorative lights for the front of the tack shed and another LED for my grooming area that I'm hoping to get installed this week. I also finally broke down and ordered aftermarket trailer screens for my horse trailer -- it's older, so the screened windows for airflow are annoyingly tiny, and it doesn't have bars, so I can't drop the big windows unless I install screens. I contacted the maker and they sell screens with install kits, but they are about $60 each. DH found some on Amazon for about $15 each. This let me lobby for a compromise of spending $30 each on the screens I really wanted.
Picture this. But in teal and black plaid, since I have tried and failed about 15 times to get a photo of the color pattern to load.

The diesel is also back in the shop. What started as replacing a few small parts in the front end got slightly more complicated (and also, expensive). But that's fine, I'd rather know that it's ready to hit the road again when I get it back, because I have an exciting weekend trip planned in August! More about that later, gotta save some blog content, since clearly I don't have anything else interesting going on in my life, haha.
Also spent some time on the river this weekend!

The dogs did a lot of sleeping

How about you? How is your summer shaping up in terms of weather? Are you a fair weather rider (like me), or a dedicated rider? (nevermind, I know the answer to that for most of you, I'm just a wimp haha).

  1. 1) HJ looks super into your selfie game.
    2) I put off buying the rehydrinse a long time because wtf even is that? But I finally caved and yeah, I'm impressed.

    1. He was driving the boat and trying not to hit anything, so possibly more important than my photo? Lol

Yeah I tossed it into a friends cart as an impulse to help her meet the free shipping threshold and I'm dying to try it out!

  2. I'm sooo jealous that Ruby is dappled and happy while Mort's hair is literally just falling out everywhere. Wanna trade for a little while? :P

    1. Haha nah 😉 I think she's still sporting some scratches though and I thought his were mostly healed up, so he's got her beat in that department! Lol

    2. His are about 95% healed, so that is going well. Now I just need to figure out why his hair is freaking falling out and get him to stop rubbing it all off of his face....

    3. Amanda at the $900 FB pony has shared some good stuff for facial crud - Zephyrs Garden or something like that? I've also heard good things about "hay where's that blue stuff".

  3. Blech it is freaking HOT here and it's going to get worse. Mae is not having any of it and I'm game to get out there. So jealous of all the grass you have for them :)

    1. I know, August is always worse than July and I'm totally in denial haha. Don't be too jealous, it's not all grass, I mowed plenty of weeds too 😂

    1. I lovvvvve how dapply Ruby gets. Cinnas are cute too but not the same (especially since hers are fading every year, ugh).

  5. 112 degrees?!?!?! Oh lawdy. I would be dead. DEAD. But your ponies look fab.

    1. I think the actual temperature was only 100 (only, hahaha). But factor in the humidity and it was a whole lot of nope going on outside.

But thank you😍 I'm pretty smitten with them.

  6. That is grossly hot, zero judgement for you taking it easy! Kachina also likes to play the game of losing her fly mask in the 120 acre field, I am not impressed by that game! I also have a few different fly masks so I can put on a different one while I wait for the old one to turn up. That's a crazy awesome amount of grass, the grass here is pretty sparse even with only 3 horses grazing in a massive pasture. In some ways it's nice though because they have enough food but they have to work for it so they don't get too fat.

    1. Yeah it's a hard balance -- I wouldn't mind a bigger pasture with less grass when it comes to Cinna and Ruby (easy keepers) but I like having a smaller pasture with an abundance of grass for my two old guys. The girls just may be relegated to wearing muzzles haha.

  7. I ride in most weather, but depends on the horse. The old man doesn't ride if it's super hot. But also, 112 might earn mine a day or two off also!
Jampy wasn't sweating well last year, and my vet said to try dark beer first before a medication. It actually worked for him too! I was shocked. He's sweating better this year luckily. All that Guinness can get expensive.

    1. I tried Guinness first when he stopped sweating (while I waited for the supplement to ship). He refused to touch it so it turned into me trying to syringe it into his mouth and him spitting it all over me... Haha. And the supplement is wayyyyyy cheaper than beer! I started him on it in April this year to be proactive and just ordered my 3rd container (while will probably get me through to September) -- but since they're usually like $15, still a better value than beer lol. And easier to get into him!

    2. That's so funny! I made a mash out of his dinner with it and he LOVED it. But he'll eat just about anything.

    3. Yeah Jack gets a beet pulp mash so I just dumped the Guinness in there and he wouldn't touch it... Haha. And normally he's not picky in the slightest so it was super weird! But he hoovers the supplement now and sweats, so all's well that ends well I suppose! Haha

  8. I totally give up when it's too hot. Or too cold. Or I'm tired. Anything really. All the injuries also mean I am way less inspired to even try. I hope you like the Equifuse when you finally get to use it.

    1. Haha yesssss solidarity! And yes, I'm totally sure I will love it once I try it -- equifuse hasn't let me down yet 😁
